In 2000 this young man took me and three friends hostage while on an expedition in Kyrgyzstan. The story was written about in the book "Over the Edge" by Gregg Child and told through several news outlets including one hour specials by 48 Hours and National Geographic. I returned to Bishkek where "Su" was being held in prison and after a great deal of diplomacy was allowed to visit him for this portrait. He is young, guilty of crimes that earn him the death penalty seven times over, sitting with a man he held hostage and yet has half a smile. The truth is, he was awkwardly happy to see me, despite his own circumstance, he was happy that I and my friends were alive.
